"In the spring of 2005, my husband and I decided we were ready to have baby #2. Our son had just turned 2, and we felt it was the perfect time. We wanted our kids to be close in age. We had little trouble conceiving our first son; however, I did suffer a miscarriage before becoming pregnant with him.

My husband and I really did not think we would have a lot of issues trying to get pregnant. Unfortunately, by the summer of 2006 we were beginning our long, heart-breaking journey on the road of infertility. Since we had been trying for over a year, my OBGYN decided to do some blood work to find out who and what the problem was.

Based on the results, we started Clomid. After six rounds of Clomid and no pregnancy, I was referred to a specialist in January of 2007. I went through more rounds of testing, including a laparoscopy. Soon after the laparoscopy, we found out I was pregnant. Sadly, it was not to be. Three short weeks after finding out we were expecting, we found out we were going to lose the baby. This led to additional testing. The diagnosis: Unexplained Infertility.

The additional testing indicated that I had a clotting mutation that caused my body to attack “foreign” objects in my body, including pregnancies. We were trying to be optimistic through this. Yes, I could get pregnant, and now we know what could be the cause of the losses.

Over the next 18-24 months, I experienced 3 more miscarriages, and had 3 IUI (intrauterine inseminations) that did not result in pregnancies.

With the advice of a co-worker who is a believer in acupuncture, I decided to do some of my own research.

I started seeing Dr. Stubbs in the spring of 2009. We did a hair analysis, and other testing. One of the series of tests she did was food allergies. We discovered that I had a wheat allergy, among others. She wanted us to put off trying for a few months in order to get my body straightened out.

Over the next few months I started researching the relationship between food allergies and infertility. I could not believe what I discovered. Gluten intolerance/allergies could result in infertility. Since gluten and wheat are similar, and people with gluten allergies cannot eat wheat, I felt like I finally had an answer.

I saw Dr. Stubbs regularly for acupuncture and nutrition testing. I also decided to try to go wheat/gluten free. I did this for 3 months. During this time, I had a follow-up with my specialist where I asked him if food allergies and infertility could be related. He told me no. He said there really was not a relationship between the two. Maybe not, but in September of 2009, I found out I was pregnant. Of course, my husband and I were anxious about what the outcome would be.

I continued to see Dr. Stubbs throughout my pregnancy.

In June of 2010, we welcomed our daughter. On an even brighter note, we welcomed another daughter in September of 2011."

1. What was it like before you came in to see us?

"Where do I start? To put it mildly, I was a miserable mess! I had frequent migraines (2-3 or more per week), my neck was in spasms often and lacked normal mobility (I wasn’t able to turn my head well enough to back up my car without using only my mirrors), my upper back often ached, with a sharp pain inside my right shoulder blade. I had occasional numbness and tingling in one of my arms when I awoke. I had osteoarthritis in my left knee and foot. When you have constant pain, it changes your life. I was irritable and short-tempered. I avoided people as much as I possible could, I was emotional and cried a lot, and had just resigned myself to a life of pain. Then one day, I had a conversation with Fran Knight, and she shared with me what a blessing Crossroads Chiropractic had been in her life, and highly recommended I go to see if they could help me. Since I value Fran’s opinion, I made an appointment pronto (believe it was early March). Ginny, Rita and Dr. Shawn could not have been nicer, or made me feel more comfortable. The x-rays showed that my jaw was out of alignment, my neck was the worst Dr. Shawn had seen in the past month, I had bone spurs on C5-7, had a sway back, and one hip was slightly higher than the other. It’s no wonder I had (past tense) so much pain! I had been in a few accidents many years before, and they had taken a toll on my body. Pain meds and muscle relaxers had allowed me to function, but I was constantly tired and wanted to sleep - it was my only relief."

2. How is it now?

"I honestly feel like a different person! Through acupuncture, deep tissue heat therapy (unsure of the actual name…oops!), adjustments, and nutritional supplements, I have regained the quality of life I thought was gone for good! I occasionally have a headache (maybe once every couple of weeks), my neck is slightly sore on the right side, and there is some slight pain on the inside of my right shoulder blade. The lack of intense pain, along with the wonderful feeling of mobility in my neck, has made me so much happier and a more energetic person. The nutritional supplements have also helped me lose some weight - bonus! I cannot express with words how much these wonderful people have improved my entire life! Going in for an appointment is like visiting family - they are all such fun-loving, kind people, and I adore each one! A few months ago, I woke up with a fever, and felt horrible. Since losing my Mom to cancer last year, this was my first time to get sick without her - I had no idea what to do - I just knew I did not have the strength nor ability to go sit in the waiting room at a Doc-in-A-Box. My first thought was to go see Dr. Shawn (knowing she is also an RN) and find out what my temperature was, and what she recommended I do to treat the problem. She took my temperature on her digital thermometer and it was 104 degrees. She kindly offered to let me take the thermometer home with me, told me to take Advil, drink lots of fluids, take my temp every hour, and if it did not start going down, I needed to go see a doctor. Fortunately, my temp did slowly start returning to normal, and I was back to myself within a couple of days. I know it sounds odd to go to your Chiropractor’s office with a fever, but without any family nearby, I knew Dr. Shawn would help me and tell me how to take care of myself. That should be a strong indicator of how I feel about her and her staff! I would encourage anyone who had any aches or pains anywhere in their body to come get x-rayed and treated…it’s absolutely LIFE CHANGING!"

- D. Perkins

Then, they got where they didn’t even work."
